Vehicle registration tax by region
Wallonia · Flanders · Brussels

VRT is the regional tax due on the first registration of a vehicle in Belgium. Depending on whether you live in Wallonia, Flanders or Brussels, the calculation method and therefore the amount can differ by several hundred euros for the same model. Compare the 2026 scales and estimate your amount.

How is the VRT calculated?

VRT is mainly calculated from vehicle power and CO₂ emissions. But each region applies its own method: fiscal hp or kW, WLTP or NEDC, with or without an EV flat rate. For the same model, the gap can reach €800 depending on the region.

Wallonia

Basis: Fiscal horsepower + CO₂ emissions (WLTP)

2026: July 2025 reform — new real-CO₂ calculation

EV: EV: based on power only (0 g CO₂)

Rates indexed every 1 July.

Flanders

Basis: Power in kW + CO₂ emissions

2026: EV flat-rate VRT since January 2026

EV: EV: fixed flat amount (strong advantage)

kW → fiscal hp conversion coefficients apply.

Brussels

Basis: Fiscal horsepower + CO₂ emissions

2026: Stable scale — no reform in 2025–2026

EV: EV: CO₂ advantage integrated into the standard calculation

These estimates apply to a new vehicle registered in 2026, without used-car reduction. They show regional gaps: EVs pay much less, while diesel is penalized more strongly in Wallonia since the July 2025 reform.

VRT on a used vehicle

VRT on a used car is reduced according to a progressive age reduction. The older the vehicle, the larger the reduction.

Frequently asked questions

Is VRT paid once or every year?

VRT is a one-off tax paid when the vehicle is first registered in Belgium. It is not renewed. Annual road tax is the tax paid every year as long as you own the vehicle.

Which region is competent for VRT when I buy a car?

VRT is due in the region where the owner is domiciled at the time of registration, not where the dealer is located. If you move afterwards, the VRT already paid does not change retroactively.

Can VRT be refunded if I resell or export the vehicle?

No, VRT is not refunded when you resell the car in Belgium. It is a definitive tax. In the event of export outside Belgium, a partial refund may be available under strict conditions.

Is VRT tax-deductible for a company?

VRT is included in the total cost of the vehicle. It is therefore deductible at the same rate as the vehicle itself: 100% for an EV, 50% for a diesel.

Does a used EV pay less VRT?

Yes. Used-car VRT benefits from a progressive age reduction in all three regions. A 3-year-old EV can therefore enjoy a reduction of about 50% on VRT.

Did VRT change in 2025 or 2026?

Yes. Wallonia reformed its VRT scale in July 2025 to rely on real WLTP emissions. Flanders introduced a fixed and reduced VRT flat rate for fully electric vehicles in January 2026.
